Truly portable air handlers for use inside New York and other big city skyscrapers, or any other difficult access location, did not exist three years ago.
On Site Manufacturing, Inc., from Indiana, designed and built a 20 ton portable air handler meeting many unique requirements of a portable unit, and also, tough enough to withstand the rigors of the rental customer.
The result of On Site Mfg’s design is a 20 ton unit on caster wheels that can fit through a standard doorway, it can fit in an elevator, and remains under 1,000 pounds. The air handler dimensions are 5’ 7” high x 2’ 8”wide x 4’ 4” long. The air handler pushes 4,500 CFM, with 20” inlet and outlets. It is fitted with a variable speed drive so the user can exactly match the air flow to the application the unit is being rented to maintain. Adaptors can be added to create double 20” discharge and double 20” return air flexible duct connection points.
The unit has 1.5” victaulic connection points for supply and return water, and a ¾” garden hose connection for the built in automatic condensate pump. The coil is rated for 250 PSI. The air handlers is fitted with an alarm and shutdown in the event the condensate pump fails, to ensure condensate water is not allowed to pour out. Power required is a frugal 10 amps, 3 phase, 480 volt, Leviton plug spec. CS-81-65C.
The design has proven itself over and over again in many different applications. The units provided cooling for many scenes of the now retired famous HBO Show Sex and the City. The units have cooled warehouse space for manufacturers, bank branches, event promoters, and even for weddings & flea markets. The units have been used in railroad station waiting rooms and aisle ways, inside large tents, in computer rooms, and in indoor tennis court spaces.
During the winter of 2006/7, for the first time, On Site Mfg. re-fitted the 20 ton air handlers with steam coils. Two of the units provided reliable steady heat to a prison facility in Upstate New York.
The units can utilize a buildings existing chilled water cooling or hot water heating systems. If required, they can also be utilized with a temporary chiller or boiler to make for a turnkey, complete package.
The 20 ton air handler has proven to be a very versatile item, customers demanding the units job after job from the operators of rental fleets who have purchased them.
